Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has received a new story trailer alongside the confirmation that the fan-favorite Annihilation Battle mode will return in the upcoming game.
Bandai Namco also confirmed that the latest entry in the flight-combat series will launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026.
A New Look at the Story
The latest trailer offers a closer look at the crew living aboard The Endurance while war continues around them.
The game’s campaign will place players against the forces of the Republic of Sotoa as they fight to protect the Federation of Central Usea. The story will combine personal moments between crew members with large aerial battles, dangerous enemy pilots and powerful military weapons.
One of the central confrontations involves Shadow 22, the leader of the elite Sotoan Shadows Unit, and Joker Flight, the squadron led by the pilot known as the Wings of Theve.
Bandai Namco says the campaign will also contain secrets and unidentified threats that players will uncover as the story progresses.
Annihilation Battle Returns
The announcement confirms the return of Annihilation Battle, a mission type that gives players considerable freedom when deciding how to complete an operation.
Instead of following a single fixed path, players must destroy as many enemy targets as possible within a time limit. They can decide which facilities and units to attack first and when to leave the combat area temporarily to reload their weapons.
Potential targets include air bases, ammunition storage sites, oil tanks and power facilities. Supply lines allow pilots to replenish their weapons during the mission, making resource management an important part of the strategy.
The objective is not simply to fly toward the nearest target. Players must evaluate the battlefield, select valuable targets and organize their attacks efficiently before time runs out.
More Destruction and Strategic Choices
Ace Combat 8 expands the mode with environmental destruction that can affect nearby structures.
Attacking a flammable target such as an oil tank can cause a chain reaction that damages surrounding buildings. Enemy aircraft that crash near structures may also destroy objects on the ground.
These systems add another strategic element to the missions. Choosing the correct target and timing an attack carefully could allow players to eliminate several enemy positions through a single chain reaction.
The developers describe this mission type as an expression of one of the series’ central ideas: allowing players to destroy enemy forces according to their own judgment.
Massive Enemy Weapons
The campaign will feature more than traditional fighter aircraft and rival pilots. Players will also encounter enormous military facilities and experimental weapons.
One of these threats is Megafloat Fatsia, an artificial island located near the Republic of Sotoa. The six-kilometer marine facility operates as an arms factory and a supply base for military invasions.
Its upper level contains a 2,000-meter runway, while its defensive systems include missiles, railguns, automated weapons, radar and unmanned aircraft. These defenses reportedly allow the facility to detect and attack targets across a wide area.
Another major threat is the Tonitrus Spear, a satellite weapon operating from low orbit. It attacks by launching dense metal projectiles toward the surface using kinetic energy.
Players will need to avoid its attacks while completing missions and fighting other enemy forces.
Preparing for Takeoff
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve appears to combine the series’ traditional aerial dogfights with larger battlefields, destructible targets and missions that offer more freedom.
The new story trailer also suggests that the relationships between the crew members will be important alongside the game’s large-scale military conflict.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026.
