PS5 Gets AI Image Upscaling: What QSSR Means for Players

Sony has introduced QSSR, a new AI-powered image upscaling technology for PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to receive it.

PS5 Gets AI Image Upscaling: What QSSR Means for Players

PS5 players are getting a new image-quality upgrade without needing to buy a PS5 Pro.

Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a new AI-powered upscaling technology designed specifically for the standard PlayStation 5. Its purpose is simple: make game images look clearer and remain more stable while playing.

WHAT IS QSSR?

QSSR is a new performance-focused version of Sony’s AI image-upscaling technology. It analyzes the image being rendered by a game and helps improve fine details, sharpness, and visual stability.

This does not mean that every PS5 game will suddenly look completely different. Developers need to add support for the technology to their games through updates. But it is an important step because it brings some AI-driven image improvements to the regular PS5 hardware.

THE FIRST GAMES TO USE IT

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to receive QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

According to Sony, the technology can improve pixel-level clarity and help busy environments look more stable in motion. That is especially useful in games with detailed cities, fast movement, foliage, particles, and complex lighting.

DO YOU NEED A PS5 PRO?

No. QSSR is designed for the regular PS5.

Sony says that PSSR remains its highest-end image-upscaling solution for PS5 Pro. However, QSSR gives standard PS5 players a new option that aims to improve image detail and stability without requiring new hardware.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This is more than a small setting for two games. Sony plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, which means more PS5 games could support it in the future.

For players, the important part is choice. When developers add QSSR support, players may be able to enjoy a cleaner and more stable image while still using their current PS5 console.

THE BOTTOM LINE

QSSR will not replace PS5 Pro features, but it gives the regular PS5 a meaningful graphics upgrade. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are only the beginning, and the real test will be how many future games adopt Sony’s new AI technology.
